Local Lifestyle
Over half of Glen Head's residents come from the five boroughs of NYC – primarily Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. They are attracted by the cleanliness, affordability, access to the city, top-rated school district, and the general attractiveness of the local neighborhoods. According to one
Newsday article, they come for the Norman Rockwell vibes, and stay for the lifestyle. After school, teens and families alike flock to the downtown area, to its restaurants and gift shops to peruse and enjoy some down time.
Dining, Entertainment & Shopping
Foodies delight at the offerings in this small town: Gemelli’s is the town’s most popular spot for prepared foods, while Heirloom Tavern is an institution for traditional comfort food. For a special night out, La Spezia is a popular Italian eatery, and kids in town love Choppers for burgers. Kiraku has fresh and tasty sushi, and of course, grab a coffee and some breakfast or lunch at the fresh, modern Honey's Bistro, before boarding the LIRR.
Things to Do
Glen Head is currently erecting a new 11,000 square foot
public library, which will also serve as a meeting place for young families and older residents alike. For the athlete,
Robbie Wagner’s Tournament Training Center is the local mecca for tennis players, as well as
Glen Head Racquet & Fitness Club, which hosts tennis and pickleballers. Many residents simply stay active by running or strolling the neighborhood streets. And there are freshly renovated ball fields off the main access road, where locals gather most weekends during the spring, summer and fall.
But as with most places on Long Island’s Gold Coast, the waterfront activities take precedence. Many residents are avid boaters who take up a slot at one of the local marinas. As Oyster Bay residents, neighbors call
Tappen Beach home in the summer - a fabulous sandy beach with two playgrounds, sports amenities and a thriving restaurant,
The Sunset Club, a siren for many on Long Island. Anglers hang out around Hempstead Harbor or take their luck out into the Long Island Sound.
Schools
Although Glen Head shares the
North Shore School District with neighboring Sea Cliff, and some parts of other neighboring communities, the elementary schools are kept separate. Kids attend either Glen Head Elementary or Glenwood Landing Elementary before matriculating to North Shore Middle School and North Shore Senior High School.
